Increase in Pneumococcus Macrolide Resistance, USA

چکیده
washing facilities were located near the lamb-petting area, and considerable effort was required to locate a handwashing basin in the wildlife center complex. Several alcohol hand sanitizers were located on site, but the microbicidal effects on Cryptosporidium spp. are insuffi cient to prevent infection, especially after direct contact with livestock (4,5). After publication of the outbreak report, an assessment of hand-washing and hygiene facilities elsewhere in Scotland found them to be suboptimal and that stronger education, regulation, and other control measures were needed to protect the public. Recent Escherichia coli O157 outbreaks in England have accentuated the unresolved issues for UK petting farms concerning hand hygiene and zoonotic infections (6).

Increase in Pneumococcus Macrolide Resistance, United States
During year 6 (2005-2006) of the Prospective Resistant Organism Tracking and Epidemiology for the Ketolide Telithromycin surveillance study, 6,747 Streptococcus pneumoniae isolates were collected at 119 centers. The susceptibility of these isolates to macrolides was compared with data from previous years. Macrolide resistance increased significantly in year 6 (35.3%) from the stable rate of app...
متن کاملHeterogeneous macrolide resistance and gene conversion in the pneumococcus.
A macrolide-resistant clinical isolate of Streptococcus pneumoniae with 23S rRNA mutations showed a heterogeneous phenotype and genotype. The mutant 23S rRNA genes from this isolate transformed susceptible strain R6 to resistance. Culture of resistant strain R6 in the absence of antibiotic pressure showed gene conversion to occur between the four 23S rRNA alleles, resulting in reversion to susc...
متن کاملComposite mobile genetic elements disseminating macrolide resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae
Macrolide resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae emerged in the U.S. and globally during the early 1990's. The RNA methylase encoded by erm(B) and the macrolide efflux genes mef(E) and mel were identified as the resistance determining factors. These genes are disseminated in the pneumococcus on mobile, often chimeric elements consisting of multiple smaller elements. To better understand the var...
متن کاملAntimicrobial susceptibility and analysis of macrolide resistance genes in Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated in Hamadan
Objective(s): Macrolide resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae pose an emerging problem globally. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of ermB and mefA genes (macrolide resistant genes) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method and to detect drug resistance patterns of S. pneumoniae isolated from clinical samples to macrolides and other antibiotic agents by E-test method. Materia...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Resistance in Streptococcus pneumoniae, Taiwan
Taiwan has one of the highest levels of antibiotic-resistant pneumococcus in the world. Pneumococcal isolates not susceptible to penicillin first appeared in Taiwan in 1986; in 1995 an increase in the prevalence of nonsusceptibility to penicillins, extended-spectrum cephalosporins, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and macrolides as well as multidrug resistance began to be recognized. With the per...
